I wouldn't trade the time I spent there for anything. Very well run and an unbeatable sense of community. Keep going Vikings :)

Today (April 11 - delayed posting, from an email to the VCSU president) as I ate lunch downtown, I overheard an individual's cell phone conversation. He was talking about his tour of VCSU. He was impressed with our rapidly advancing technology here, amazed that at this university you didn't even have to dial into the network from the dorms because it was already there. He also told of the great history that VCSU holds, from the old lockers left from when this was simply an education school to the richness of the old buildings. He was overwhelmed with good words about the people and things he learned about the university today.
While I didn't get a chance to talk with this individual, he had nothing but good news to tell the person on the other end of the phone conversation. Its nice to hear those things coming from someone who doesn't know there is a "VCSU ear" listening. |

. My daughter, Lindsey Savoy (married name Lesniewski) graduated from VCSU approximately 2 ½ years ago. She excepted a teaching job at the Pasadena school district in Houston, Tx. This year she is teaching 4th graders “Gifted and Talented “and “English as a second language”. During the year she also has done workshops and presentation for the district, the state and the Gifted and Talented program. She is a hard working dedicated teacher who loves her children.
This year she is nominated for teacher of the year in her district. What a phenomenal thing for a 2nd year teacher! The following is a list of comments written about her from one of her own colleagues: “she has a true love of teaching, she is enthusiast and contagious, walk into her room at anytime and you will find her students learning and loving school, she is consistently developing and implementing new ideas and she shares these ideas with others, she is truly the type of teacher you would want teaching your own child”.
I wanted to tell you this because I believe VCSU has a wonderful staff that helped her grow into the person she is today. One person in particular is Ms. Jan Drake. She was always there for guidance and help. As a parent, I felt good about my daughter being away from home because of Ms. Drake.
Thank you for letting me share this with you. I’m very proud of my daughter and the life she and her husband have made for themselves and I’m grateful to your school.
Sincerely,
Connie Savoy |

I know there have been a number of opportunities for me to express my pride and satisfaction with VCSU, but nothing ever stuck out in my mind. Every experience I have had has been wonderful. I love the faculty, the staff, the students, the atmosphere, and the education I have received here at VCSU. Where would I start when asked, "What do you love about VCSU?" This is my fifth year, I graduate this spring. I have given tours, worked with the summer orientation program, and learning to live...each one giving me the opportunity to tell everyone what a great school we have allowing me to draw people into VCSU and work at keeping them here. I have told these people there is no where else in the world I would have chosen, but right here in Valley City, N.D.
Finally, in my fifth year, I cannot answer this question without crying - knowing I am about to leave the one place, besides my hometown, that has become my home. I am leaving the friends that have become my brothers and sisters. I am leaving the many adults (faculty and staff) that have become my parents away from home. Someone to look after me, to listen to me, and the people to make me laugh. The people who have watched me grow the last 5 years and those who have taught me so much about living and growing and learning along the way.
What has brought me to this conclusion; that one experience that I can use to explain 'Why I Love VCSU'? My brother has been sent to CO. with the 142nd Engineer Combat Battalion and will soon be sent overseas. There are students from this school that have been sent to various places and I think about them, and my brother, every day. VCSU, this home away from home, is so supportive. I cannot express how I feel when a professor can email me, or meet me in the grocery store, or catch me in the hallway and have the care and concern to ask me how my brother is doing. These people do not know my family. I may have only had one class with them as my professor. But they remember. They recognize my name, my face, and when my brother's name flashes on the TV and he says hello to my family- my professors can walk up to me and say, "How are you, Anita? And how is your brother and family?"
When we had our official send off in Oakes, we asked the soldiers to take care of each other and return safely. The one request that the soldiers had for those at home was "for everyone to take care of their families while they are gone." VCSU has become my family, and I promise to tell my brother you have taken care of me. It means so much to know that so many people care and are there for me in times of need. There are so many people that have said to me, "If you need anything..." ....those words are very much appreciated.
There is no way to say "thank you" to each and every person on this campus that has supported me and my family, and all of the other students on this campus the way that VCSU does. So - I send this to you, Dr. Chaffee. You can pass this on or spread the word by mouth...but I thank you and this university for the support you give and the family you offer.
